REALIZE™ Band

The REALIZE™ Band has been approved for use in surgical weight loss procedures by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The procedure is designed to help patients who are considered morbidly obese, typically those who are about 100 pounds overweight and have a body mass index (BMI) over 35. By creating a smaller stomach chamber with which to store food, the REALIZE™ Band allows the patient to feel full much earlier than usual. Patients can lose up to one to two pounds per week with REALIZE™ Band, leading to significant weight loss and less risk of developing life-threatening illnesses that can be brought on by morbid obesity. Plus, the REALIZE™ Band is minimally invasive and involves less post-operative discomfort and recovery time than other forms of weight loss surgery. The REALIZE™ Band can also be adjusted over time to allow for more or less food intake.

The Procedure

The REALIZE™ Band procedure is performed laparoscopically, meaning there will be fewer, and smaller, incisions and scarring. The Bariatric Surgeons will use tiny instruments and a small camera to visualize the surgical field. They will place the REALIZE™ Band around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small stomach chamber. This smaller stomach pouch will essentially function as the stomach normally would; however, it will only be capable of storing small amounts of food and liquid, giving you a feeling of fullness much sooner and causing you to lose weight. Over time, you will be able to have the band adjusted or removed, giving you the option of eating more, or less, at a given time.

Recovery

There will be some discomfort after the REALIZE™ Band procedure; however, it should be brief and mild and can be managed with medication. Patients should expect to make several lifestyle changes after the procedure. For REALIZE™ Band surgery to serve the greatest benefit, patients will be asked to eat several small meals a day instead of three large ones; and the meals should have greater nutritional value that what may have been the norm.
