BluePoint Surgical, in conjunction with Metro Bariatrics, offers our patients Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastiric Bypass, Open Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding (LAP-BAND) and REALIZE Band.
Malabsorptive procedures shorten the digestive tract
Restrictive procedures reduce how much the stomach can hold
Combined procedures shorten the digestive tract and reduce how much the stomach can hold
Revisional procedures help to reduce the size of a stretched pouch after bariatric surgery
The Lap-Band System
A silicone band is placed around the upper part of the stomach. From this a small pouch is created making the stomach holds less food and inducing the feeling of satiety.
Advantages of the Lap-Band

Laparoscopic REALIZE Band Surgery
REALIZE Band surgery offers many of the same advantages as the LAP-BAND System procedure. Designed to result in significant weight loss by limiting the stomach’s ability to store large amounts of food, the REALIZE Band procedure creates a small stomach chamber without cutting or stapling and is known for its quick recovery and minimal scarring. The REALIZE Band can be loosened or tightened over time to allow more or less food to be digested. The goal of the procedure is to give you a feeling of fullness earlier than usual, allowing you to lose weight and reduce the risk of developing obesity related conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Open Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
This operation is the most common and successful combined procedure in the United States. First, the surgeon creates a small stomach pouch to restrict food intake. Next, a Y-shaped section of the small intestine is attached to the pouch to allow food to bypass the lower stomach, the duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine), and the first portion of the jejunum (the second segment of the small intestine). This reduces the amount of calories and nutrients the body absorbs.

Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
When a laparoscopic operation is performed, a small video camera is inserted into the abdomen. The surgeon views the procedure on a separate video monitor. Most laparoscopic surgeons believe this gives them better visualization and access to key anatomical structures.
The camera and surgical instruments are inserted through small incisions made in the abdominal wall. This approach is considered less invasive because it replaces the need for one long incision to open the abdomen. A recent study shows that patients having had laparoscopic weight loss surgery experience less pain after surgery resulting in easier breathing and lung function and higher overall oxygen levels. Other realized benefits with laparoscopy have been fewer wound complications such as infection or hernia, and patients returning more quickly to pre-surgical levels of activity.
