Follow-Up Care
After you are discharged from the hospital, you must return to your surgeon’s office for follow-up visits on a regular schedule:
- One to two weeks after surgery
- Four to six weeks after surgery
- Three months after surgery
- Six months after surgery
- Nine months after surgery
- 12 months after surgery
- Every four to six months after the first year

Each follow-up visit will consist of an evaluation by a member of the healthcare team. During your follow-up visits, lab tests will be done to check the complete blood count, protein, iron, calcium, vitamin B1 and vitamin B12 levels in your blood. Additional nutritional supplements may be required, depending on these levels. Gastric banding patients may have their band adjusted at these visits.
After the first year, lab tests will be performed every six months. More frequent visits may be required, based on your individual needs. In addition, you are strongly encouraged to join the Weight Loss Surgery Support Group sponsored by the Virginia Weight Loss Surgery Center.
