Nutrition Before and After
Here are a few tips to help you and your body prepare for surgery:
- Start chewing your food thoroughly
- Slow down the speed at which you eat
- Start listening to your body and recognize your level of fullness
- Start drinking fluids slowly
- Practice eating meals without drinking fluids
- Cut down on your intake of caffeine intake and carbonated beverages
- Clean out your kitchen cabinets of empty-calorie foods
- Start your exercise program now
- Have a good support system in place
- Slow down the speed at which you eat
Foods Typically Not Well Tolerated
- Bread
- Rice
- Pasta
- Overcooked, dry meats
- Fried, greasy foods (high fat foods)
- Spicy foods
- High sugar foods / sweets
Foods Well Tolerated
- Soft high protein foods
- Moist foods
- Low fat dairy products
- Lean, moist poultry
- Fish and seafood
- Soft fruits and vegetables
Long Term Meal Plan
Gastric Bypass & Sleeve
- 3-6 smallmeals per day
- Average calorie range 1200-1500 calories/day
- Protein and produce based meals
- Avoiding high fat foods
- Avoiding foods with more than 6g of sugar
- Measuring food, and awareness of portion sizes
- Support
Long Term Meal Plan
Gastric Banding
- 3 meals per day
- 1/2 to 1 cup of food/meal
- Moist foods
- Solid protein and produce based meals
- Measuring portions
- Support
- Self control, the band will allow you to eat foods that are high in fat, sugar and calories. It is up to you, the patient to choose foods that are nutrient dense and work well with your band.
