My surgery was Dec 13th and I have lost 38 lb so far and graduated from mushies yesterday to cooked veggies and meats! Valentines day I can eat my first salad! I have outgrown my clothes and gave away 8 bags of size 22-24, 2X and 3X: dressy work clothes, shoes, sweaters, coats, etc. I am now wearing 18-20 tops, 14-16 slacks if stretchy material. (I am still biggest in the middle.) Is there a swap meet where we can bring out outgrown clothes and swap with others who want to give away what they no longer can wear because they outgrew (shrunk) from their FAT clothes? I would love to be part of one as I will continue to have things to give away and would like interim dressy office clothes to 'borrow' while I whittle myself down to even smaller sizes. I started the entire process in March 2011. I'm less than a month away from surgery and I'm getting nervous. I've never had any kind of surgery before. I know it's going to be a complete lifestyle change for me and as long as I follow what I'm supposed to do, the pounds will come off. My questions is for those who have had the surgery done already. I'm getting the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass done. How has your body reacted to alcohol consumption after the surgery? I know it's recommended that we don't drink alcohol as you'll absorb it quicker leading to rapid intoxication, but I'd like to hear from people who have the experience. Each day it will get easier and easier to drink fluids at a normal rate, so it is ok that you are not feeling a "full" feeling 5 days out from surgery. What's important to focus on is that you are drinking at least 64 floz total per day and 50gm (female) or 65 gm(male) of protein in from your drinks. The pouch nerve endings need to heal. You will get a full feeling in time, you have to heal. Just follow the guidelines you were given and don't take in more than you are allowed. I am five days post RNY bypass, and not sure what to think. The surgery went fine, and I seem to be healing well. Weird thing is, though, I don't feel as "restricted" as I had expected. Meaning, I can drink fluids pretty easily (not gulping), and drink broth or creamed soup without feeling full. Is this normal? I know I was insatiable before, but I thought I would feel like I'd burst after drinking only a small amount, and I'm not experiencing that. Any thoughts? After about a month I was off all the insulin and pills. My blood counts are now normal. This surgery was the best thing for me, not only have I lost 84 lbs so far, I no longer have any comorbids. I am 73 lbs down. I am so afraid of gaining weight back. I feel great! But food was my friend so It is a lifestyle change. I am exercising and pushing my goal to 145, but I will settle with 155 for life. It takes longer now to loose a pound even though we are not eating much. I find that if I continue to eat small meals often and drink the water, that is the magic! I started at 242 lbs. I still order too much food when I go out and then just freeze it or throw it away. Sometimes it is nauseating, but I am glad about that. Your portion size should not grow beyond 1 cup of food ever. For band, there is some variation in portion size, but you should never exceed 1 cup per meal regardless of how full or empty your band is. The bank forecast its net profit of 2008 to dive 61.3% year on year to HK$5.98 billion. BOC Hong Kong posted a net charge of impairment allowances of HK$3.2 billion in the third quarter of this year, against its investments in securities, mainly related to the U.S. non-agency mortgage-backed securities and senior unsecured debt issued by Lehman Brothers. In addition, its insurance unit also recorded higher operating losses resulting from the weak performance of its investment assets. BOC Hong Kong, the city's biggest bank by assets, said it would clinch an agreement with its parent BOC to obtain a subordinated credit facility of US$2.5 billion by Dec. 23.The loan will help the group realize greater operating flexibility and meet its future development demand, said the bank. China Star said in a statement filed with the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEx) that it expects to sell the shares at a price not less than HK$0.05 apiece. Part of the proceeds from the share offering will be used to pay back debt worth HK$338 million. The issue plan is still subject to shareholders' approval. The Pan-Pearl River Delta covers Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guizhou, Yunnan and Sichuan provinces, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Hong Kong and Macao. The region has a population of 457 million, or 34.8 percent of the country's total. It covers an area of 2 million square km, or 20.9 percent of the country's total land.The belly of the rooster is also the most productive and abundant part of China. In 2008, the total GDP of the eight provinces and Guangxi reached $1.59 trillion, accounting for 36.9 percent of the country's total.But the sweeping global financial crisis has taken a heavy toll on the region."Hong Kong and Macao, and the eastern coastal Guangdong and Fujian, were hit hardest by the financial crisis," said Fan Hengshan, Director of the Regional Development Department under the National Development and Reform Commission, at the Fifth High-level Forum on Pan-Pearl River Delta Regional Cooperation and Development in Nanning, the capital city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on June 9-13.From January to May, Guangdong, one of the major export provinces, witnessed an 18.5-percent drop in exports year on year, while Fujian saw a 15.7-percent decrease.As China's biggest economic region, the Pan-Pearl River Delta will help forge cooperative efforts for its members to combat the financial crisis, Chong Quan, Assistant Minister of Commerce, said at the forum.Intra-regional advantagesAmong the big family of 11 members, the gap between the developed areas and less developed ones is vast. Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong are the three eldest brothers in terms of their economic status. Hong Kong is the financial, logistical and information center of the Asia-Pacific region; Macao enjoys a unique link with the EU and Portuguese-speaking countries; and Guangdong has always been China's most economically productive province. In the past decade, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region, also known as the Big Pearl River Delta, has been a powerful engine in China's economic development.Some provinces are less developed economically, especially Jiangxi, Guizhou and Hainan. Their respective GDP in 2008 was 648.03 billion yuan ($95.3 billion), 333.3 billion yuan ($49 billion) and 145.9 billion yuan ($21.5 billion)—much lower than the national average. Guizhou's per-capita GDP was only 7,264 yuan ($1,068), the lowest in the entire country.The Big Pearl River Delta will play a leading role in promoting the development of the Pan-Pearl River Delta, according to the State Council's Pearl River Delta Region Reform and Development Plan issued in January. The development differences among the members in the Pan-Pearl River Delta provide an excellent opportunity for intra-regional industry transfer, Huang Huahua, Governor of Guangdong Province, said at the forum. The provinces will transfer labor-intensive industries in the processing and manufacturing sectors from the east to the west, he said.Tong Xing, Vice Governor of Guangdong, said 100,000 enterprises must participate in industry transfers in the Pearl River Delta. A Honda spokesman said that the JV's car sales are expected to exceed 200,000 units this year, whereas the original estimate was 195,000. A detailed plan is under consideration but no final decision has been made, said the spokesman. In October, Honda sold 50,660 vehicles, 42% more than the same period of last year. The Japanese auto maker expects its China sales to increase 10% to 520,000 units in 2009 from 473,000 units a year earlier, said Atsuyoshi Hyogo, chairman and president of Honda's regional operations in China, according to an earlier report from China Knowledge. China currently lacks a comprehensive basic law on animal protection. The underdeveloped legal system is thus unable to put all animals under effective protection. Thus, scholars suggested drafting China's first law on the protection of animal welfare, so as to cope with problems such as animal abuse and desertion in accordance with laws. The law is expected to make animal owners more responsible and thus cut the government's expense in this regard, prevent livestock breeding pollution and encourage the virtue of caring for animals.The draft also includes a proposal to revise the Criminal Law to define the crimes of animal abuse, animal desertion and spreading video or photo messages about animal abuse.The drafting of the animal protection act has attracted public attention since the day it was announced.Some people believe it's absolutely necessary to punish those who abuse animals, while others believe that animal protection is something only developed countries can afford to consider.Apart from public doubt, some legal experts have also expressed worry. If most people are still indifferent to animal abuse, they say, a single law can do little to solve the problems.However, a survey carried out in June shows that over 80 percent of respondents support an animal protection law and over 75 percent agree that those who abuse animals to death should be criminally prosecuted.Put humans firstLi Kejie (Procuratorial Daily): The proposed animal protection act is considerate and detailed in terms of animal welfare and rights. If all animals were treated in accordance with its stipulations, their living conditions would be better than those of people in impoverished areas.But legislation must be based on the actual level of social development, and that includes legislation addressing animal welfare. Today, China has just started a series of basic social welfare programs and in some backward areas, even human beings' basic rights are not well ensured, so it's unrealistic to ensure animals high-level welfare at the current stage. Anyway, people should be put first in the process of social development. It's ridiculous to overemphasize animal rights while human beings are still suffering.It is also unrealistic from a legal perspective to greatly improve animal rights before human beings' basic rights are ensured.Yang Yuze (China Youth Daily): For animals to be empowered with certain rights, there must be some conditions: First, the rise of the middle class, who will change animals from work animals into pets and strengthen the sentimental bond between human beings and animals; second, technological progress, which will facilitate the protection of human rights and then benefit animals; third, a social consensus on the protection of animal rights. Without these three conditions, even if there is relevant legislation, it will not work.Animal rights protection is based on a well-developed legal system, but the most important basis is a high level of economic development. The Chinese have just solved the problem of food and clothing, but many social security challenges remain striking, including employment, housing and health care. It seems unrealistic to admit and protect animal welfare and rights right now.Besides, laws should be based on social customs and social morality. For example, residents in some areas have to deal with some animals according to local customs, even though they are otherwise animal lovers.
